Hexokinase is the first enzyme in the glycolytic pathway and sets the pace for the entire process. By converting glucose into glucose-6-phosphate, it ensures that glucose is retained within the cell for further metabolism. This step is also regulated by feedback inhibition, where the accumulation of glucose-6-phosphate inhibits the activity of hexokinase, thus preventing excessive glucose phosphorylation.
