Industrial catalysts can be broadly classified into two categories: Heterogeneous and Homogeneous catalysts.
Heterogeneous Catalysts: These are in a different phase than the reactants, typically solid catalysts in contact with liquid or gas reactants. Examples include zeolites and metal oxides. Homogeneous Catalysts: These are in the same phase as the reactants, often dissolved in a solvent. Examples include organometallic complexes used in processes like olefin polymerization.
