Deuterium, also known as heavy hydrogen, is an isotope of hydrogen with one proton and one neutron in its nucleus. It is represented by the symbol ²H or D. Due to the additional neutron, deuterium is twice as massive as the most common hydrogen isotope, protium (¹H).
