The main catalysts used in FT synthesis are based on iron and cobalt. Iron catalysts are less expensive and more effective for processing syngas with a higher CO content, whereas cobalt catalysts are more active and have higher selectivity towards longer-chain hydrocarbons, making them ideal for producing liquid fuels.
