Several challenges exist in methanation catalysis. One of the main issues is the formation of carbon deposits (coking) on the catalyst surface, which can deactivate the catalyst. Additionally, achieving high selectivity for methane over other hydrocarbons and maintaining catalyst stability at high temperatures are critical challenges.
