Catalytic reactions often occur on the surface of solid materials, which can be quite large. Simulating the entire surface is computationally expensive. PBCs allow for a smaller, manageable section of the surface to be studied, while still capturing the essential physics of the larger system. This helps in understanding phenomena such as adsorption, diffusion, and reaction kinetics.
