Catalysis is essential in ammonia synthesis because it greatly enhances the rate of the chemical reaction. Without a suitable catalyst, the reaction between nitrogen and hydrogen is extremely slow due to the strong triple bond in the nitrogen molecule (N₂). The presence of a catalyst lowers the activation energy, making the process feasible on an industrial scale.
