Which Types of Catalysts Can Be Studied with ¹H NMR?
¹H NMR is versatile and can be used to study a variety of catalytic systems:
- Homogeneous Catalysts: These are catalysts that are in the same phase as the reactants, typically in solution. ¹H NMR is particularly useful for studying organometallic complexes and enzyme catalysts. - Heterogeneous Catalysts: These catalysts exist in a different phase than the reactants, such as solid catalysts in liquid or gas-phase reactions. Although more challenging, ¹H NMR can still provide valuable information about these systems, often through techniques like magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR.
