The most common catalysts used in HDS are transition metals like molybdenum (Mo) and tungsten (W) supported on alumina (Al2O3). These are often promoted with cobalt (Co) or nickel (Ni) to enhance their catalytic activity. The combination of these metals creates a highly active surface for the adsorption and subsequent reaction of sulfur compounds with hydrogen.
