electrochemical water splitting
What are the Key Reactions in Water Splitting?
The overall water splitting process involves two half-reactions:
- Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER) at the anode:
\[ 4OH^- \rightarrow 2H_2O + O_2 + 4e^- \]
or
\[ 2H_2O \rightarrow O_2 + 4H^+ + 4e^- \]
- Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) at the cathode:
\[ 4H^+ + 4e^- \rightarrow 2H_2 \]
or
\[ 2H_2O + 2e^- \rightarrow H_2 + 2OH^- \]
