During photosynthesis, plants convert carbon dioxide (CO₂) and water into glucose and oxygen using sunlight. Enzymes, which are biological catalysts, play a critical role in this process. The enzyme ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO) is essential for carbon fixation, enabling the conversion of CO₂ into organic molecules. Enhancing the efficiency of RuBisCO through bioengineering could potentially boost photosynthetic rates and increase carbon sequestration.
