Dehydrogenases function by catalyzing the oxidation-reduction reactions, where a substrate is oxidized by the removal of hydrogen atoms. These enzymes often require coenzymes such as NAD+ or FAD, which act as electron acceptors. The hydrogen atoms removed from the substrate are transferred to these coenzymes, converting them into their reduced forms, NADH or FADH2.
