How Do Catalytic Converters Work?

Catalytic converters operate based on two primary types of reactions: oxidation and reduction. During oxidation, carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons are converted into carbon dioxide and water. In reduction, nitrogen oxides are converted into nitrogen and oxygen. These reactions typically occur at high temperatures, between 400 and 800 degrees Celsius, which is why the converter is located close to the engine to utilize the heat from exhaust gases.
