In some cases, catalyst deactivation can be reversed through regeneration techniques. Thermal treatments, such as calcination, can remove coke deposits or other organic contaminants. Chemical treatments may be used to remove poisons or to re-dissolve fouled materials. However, irreversible deactivation, such as that caused by sintering or severe poisoning, may necessitate the replacement of the catalyst.
