The most common catalysts for HDS are transition metal sulfides, usually molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) promoted with cobalt (Co) or nickel (Ni). These catalysts are supported on porous materials like alumina to increase their surface area and activity. The CoMo or NiMo catalysts are highly effective in breaking the carbon-sulfur bonds in the feedstock.
