Hydrodesulfurization can remove a wide range of sulfur compounds, including thiols (R-SH), sulfides (R-S-R'), disulfides (R-S-S-R'), and thiophenes. Thiophenes and their derivatives are particularly challenging to remove due to their aromatic nature and stability, but the HDS process is designed to handle even these refractory sulfur compounds.
