What Role Does Catalysis Play in the Contact Process?
Catalysis is at the heart of the Contact Process. The oxidation of SO2 to SO3 is facilitated by a solid vanadium(V) oxide (V2O5) catalyst. This catalyst increases the rate of the reaction without being consumed, allowing the process to occur under more favorable conditions of temperature and pressure, thereby optimizing the conversion efficiency.
