What Role Do Intermediate Complexes Play in Heterogeneous Catalysis?
In heterogeneous catalysis, intermediate complexes form on the surface of the catalyst. For instance, in the hydrogenation of alkenes using a palladium catalyst, the alkene first adsorbs onto the palladium surface, forming a palladium-alkene complex. This complex then interacts with hydrogen atoms, leading to the formation of the hydrogenated product.
