Raney Nickel is a finely divided, porous form of nickel that is widely used as a heterogeneous catalyst in various industrial processes. It is created by treating a nickel-aluminum alloy with a concentrated solution of sodium hydroxide, which leaches out the aluminum, leaving behind a porous nickel structure.
