The DOC operates by promoting oxidation reactions. When the exhaust gases pass through the catalyst, the DOC facilitates the conversion of CO and HC into carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O). Additionally, it helps in the oxidation of soluble organic fractions of particulate matter, thereby reducing the overall PM emissions. The catalyst typically consists of a honeycomb structure coated with a thin layer of precious metals such as platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), and sometimes rhodium (Rh).
