Photoelectrocatalysts work by absorbing photons to generate electron-hole pairs. The electrons and holes then migrate to the surface of the catalyst, where they participate in redox reactions. Key to their function is the band structure of the material: the conduction band and valence band must be aligned in such a way that they can effectively participate in the targeted reaction.
