Catalysts can be either suspended in the reaction mixture (homogeneous catalysis) or fixed within the reactor vessel (heterogeneous catalysis). In packed bed reactors, the catalyst is often in the form of pellets or granules. In fluidized bed reactors, the catalyst particles are suspended in the reactant flow, providing high surface area and excellent heat and mass transfer.
